Galkacyo,(insidesomalia.org)- At least 8 people reported to have been killed and more than 20 others wounded on Monday In Galkacyo, a town in the Mudug region of Somalia when fighting erupted among rival clans, say reports recieved from the area.
The fighting which started at early morning of today continued more than two hour in East of Galkacyo especially the Barahley area , an area dominated by Sa'ad sub clan of Habargidir came after a coalition of Majerteen And Dir clan militias attacked the Barahley area, said local reporter based in south Galkacyo.
The reason behind the fighting is related to a row over land, few kilometers of land space near south Galkacyo Airport where each of these three clans claim its ownership.
Reports say the fighting was used with heavy gunfire, small arms and hand proppled grenades and was continuing since in the afternoon of today.
In North Galkacyo medical reports conformed five people mostly fighting militias were killed and ten others wounded and reports from a hospital in south of Galkacyo said four people including civilians were killed and 14 others wounded.
Galkacyo partly comes under the control of Puntland semi-autonamous regional state which is the Northern part and south part is now controlled by aborted self styled semi-autonamous regional state of Gal-mudug.
Northern Galkacyo dominated by Majeerteen sub clan of Darood that Somali President Abdullahi Yousuf belongs has a booming economy and business activities compared to impoverish south of Galkacyo where economy is steadily growing.
"In central regions of Somalia clan fighting almost flares up on disputes over land, boreholes, resources, garzing and water distribution" said ELmi Ali, a clan elder in north Galkacyo.
In the few years the two sub clans of Majerteen of Daarood and Sa'ad sub clan of Habar gidir fought routinely and many peoples' life claimed but hostalities were reduced after the current Somali Transitional Federal Government was established in 2004 in Kenya and President Abdullahi Yousuf was elected as the The President of Somalia.
Many Somali clans believe that sa'ad sub clan has a political coaliation with Majeerteen sub clan and the president Abdullahi Yousuf who had dismissed Hussein Aideed a powerful ally of President who supported TFG relocate in Mogadishu and the President stay in former presidential palace kept by Aideed' s Militias.
Analyists ask about Dir clan's coalition with The Majerteen, saying that this could split the old relationship and alliance between Dir and Hawiya a coalition known as Irirism used to overturn the late regime of General Mohamed Siyad from Marehan sub clan of Darood.
Also, this kind of confrontations could lead the split of the political coalition between Sa'ad sub clan and TFG and this could weaken the abillity of government to contain violence in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The Horn of Africa country has had no effective government since warlords overthrew Dictator Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other, plunging the country into chaos.
